Puerto Rico, First to Detect HLB, Continues to Wage the Battle of Prevention

Huanglongbing (HLB) or “citrus greening” was first detected in Puerto Rico in 2009; by 2011 it had spread throughout the island. The Citrus Clean Plant Network in Puerto Rico maintains the citrus collection of the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez (UPRM), with 27 citrus varieties at the Adjuntas and Isabela Experimental Stations. In addition five private nurseries are regularly tested for HLB and citrus tristeza virus (CTV).

An average of 50,000 tested plants are produced annually. Outreach activities include field days to demonstrate the use of best practices to minimize vector populations and prevention of citrus systemic diseases.
